Zestril is an ACE inhibitor. Its active ingredient is lisinopril. ACE means angiotensin converting enzyme. Lisinopril is the synthetic derivative of peptide. It shows its effect by dilating the blood vessels so that blood circulation becomes easy.
Zestril is used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults & children above 6 years of age. Also, Zestril is used for the treatment of adult congestive heart failure, or to enhance the chances of survival post a heart attack. Prevention of kidney problems, heart attacks and strokes is possible if the high BP is kept under control.
How to Use
This medicine can be administered orally with/without food as instructed by the doctor, generally one time every day. If you are consuming the medicine’s suspension form, then properly shake the bottle before every dose. Measure the dose carefully with the help of a special spoon or measuring device. Don’t make use of a kitchen spoon as there wouldn’t be any proper measurement.
The dosage is according to your response to drug and medical condition. For kids, the dosage is on the basis of weight. To decrease the danger of side effects, the doctor may instruct you to use this drug at low dose and eventually improve the dosage. The doctor’s instructions must be followed carefully.
Avail emergency medical aid if you observe any of the following signs of a hypersensitive reaction: severe stomach pain, hives, difficult breathing; swollen throat, lips, face or tongue.
At once inform your doctor if you observe severe side effect like:
- Less or no urination;
- Rapid increase in weight
- Body aches
- Symptoms of flu
- Tired feeling,
- Muscle weakness,
- Pounding or irregular heartbeats;
- Chest pain; or
Some less severe side effects are as follows:
- Depressed mood;
- Upset stomach
- Skin rash
This medication shouldn’t be used if you show an allergic response to lisinopril or towards some other ACE inhibitor, like fosinopril, enalapril, benazepril, moexipril, captopril, ramipril, perindopril, quinapril, or trandolapril.
Tell your doctor about the following conditions if you suffer from any so that you can safely use zestril.
- Kidney disease
- Liver disorder;
- Heart disease
- Congestive heart failure;
- Marfan syndrome,
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Sjogren's syndrome,
Pregnancy and Zestril
Lisinopril shouldn’t be used if you are pregnant. The unborn baby could possibly be harmed. Avoid the use of this drug and if you get pregnant, tell your physician at once. Lisinopril can be responsible for death or injury to the unborn baby/fetus if you consume the drug during your 2nd or 3rd trimester. Effective methods of birth control should be used while taking zestril.
It is unknown if zestril can pass into the maternal milk or not. Don’t use this drug is you are breastfeeding without informing your doctor.
Recommended for hypertension, it is also given for managing heart problems and also given after a heart attack.
Only use the drug as prescribed by the physician. Take Zestril with meal so that it can prevent stomach upset.
Do not take double dosage. If you have missed a dose and remember it, you can take it. If it is time for the next dosage, then it is better to skip the earlier one.
This drug can cause dizziness, fainting and lightheadedness. These can worsen if taken with other medications or with alcohol. Drive the vehicle only if you are aware that you are stable. If the symptoms persist, better consult the doctor. You should also take the right quantity of the drug, not more or not less.
