Protonix is an effective drug used for the treatment of Erosive Esophagitis, a damage caused to esophagus from GERD or stomach acid.
Protonix belongs to a group of medicines known as Proton Pump Inhibitor. The drug acts on the Proton Pump, which produces the stomach acid and lowers its production.
The drug has to be taken only for a short period. Doctors do not generally prescribe the drug for more than a week or for more than ten days. The medicine has to be taken with food to prevent any stomach upset. The drug should have to be swallowed whole. If the drug is broken or crushed, the drugs may enter the body fast. Always follow your doctor’s direction when taking Protonix. Do not stop the drug once you feel fine as it can only complicate matters. If the drug is stopped in the middle of a course, there is a possibility of Erosive Esophagitis to come back.
Coming to the doses, if a dose is missed take it as soon as you remember it. But if time for your regular doses, do not take the missed one. It is better not to mix two doses of the drug. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical help. But a Protonix overdose is not expected to cause any life threatening symptoms.
You should have to tell your doctor about all your allergic reactions and also about all your health conditions. Tell your doctor if you have allergies to any drugs, food or any substance. Inform your doctor if you have any specific disease of the liver, kidney or heart.
The drug is FDA pregnancy category B, which means that the drug is not harmful to the unborn babe. But if pregnant it is better to discuss with the doctor about all the risks and benefits of the drug while taking it during pregnancy. Though it is not known if Protonix passes into breast milk, you should not take the drug without consulting the doctor during feeding.
Sometimes you might need long-term treatment with Protonix. But in that case there is a possibility that you may come across Vitamin B12 deficiency as the drug lowers the vitamin’s absorption. So if you are on a long-term prescription, you have to be under the constant watch of your doctor.
Protonix also interacts with certain medicines so you have to inform your doctor about all the medications, including the herbal drugs, diet supplements and prescriptive/non-prescriptive drugs. You have to tell your doctor if you are using ampicillin, atazanavir, blood thinners, clopidogrel and ketoconazole. If you are taking these medicines, your doctor may not prescribe protonix or he may go for a dosage adjustment.
Just like other drugs, protonix also comes with many allergic reactions and also side effects. Some o the severe allergic reactions with Protonix are swelling of the lungs, throat, lips or tongue, hives and difficult breathing. If you come across these symptoms, stop the drug and immediately contact your doctor.
The drug is only used for a short period, may be for seven to ten days. Certain conditions linked with Zollinger–Ellison syndrome are also considered to be treated with Protonix.
Take Protonix with food to prevent stomach upset. It should only be taken according to your doctor’s direction.
If a dosage is missed, better consult the doctor. Do not go for double dosage.
This drug may cause dizziness and it can worsen if taken with alcohol or certain other medicines. Better do not drive till you know you are fit.
